The boatshed was originally constructed in the 1930s to provide shelter for boats on the Swan River. In the early 2000s the structure had returned to a worn state and the family undertook refurbishment. As part of that refresh the shed was painted in a bold blue colour, which dramatically raised its profile as a tourist and photographic landmark. By 2019 it had become the most-photographed attraction in Perth, featured in social-media feeds, travel guides and even airline advertisements transforming a humble boathouse into a city icon.
